Founded in early 2023, OPAP is a group of artists, ranging from beginner to advanced, who get together on a weekly basis (weather permitting) at a predetermined location in and around the Ottawa area to paint outside, en plein air.

What is painting en plein air and why should you care?

Plein air painting is painting outside, on location. Plein air painting is one of the hardest and most rewarding things an artist will ever do for themselves. You will be challenged by a large and distracting scene and the need to simplify it. You will see green. Lots and lots of green, and you will need to make sense of it. You will need to focus on the big shapes, values, colour temperature, composition, perspective, etc., all the painting elements that are important for all artists to know and to master if you are serious about your art. 

You will face a variety of elements:  what Mother Nature has in store for you ranging from the wind to the heat/cold; the curiosity of the public and talking to people who are very interested in what you are doing, to name a few.

Why is doing this so attractive? Plein air painters become better artists faster because they must learn and apply the elements of art fast. Believe it or not, it’s addictive. Plein air painting allows you to be immersed in the location. You feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your cheeks. You hear the children playing, their laughter, the cars passing, the waves in the water, the rustling of the leaves. When you return to the studio, you can complete your study or paint a larger version of your study by remembering these feelings and painting as though you were still on location.

The partnership of Arteast with OPAP could lead to many interesting opportunities, which can only be achieved with your participation.

Le groupe Ottawa Plein Air Painters a été fondé en 2023. Il comprend des artistes débutants aux plus expérimentés qui se rencontrent sur une base hebdomadaire (selon la météo bien entendu) et ce, pour faire de la peinture en plein air.

Peinture en plein air – description

La peinture en plein air, ça veut dire, la peinture à l’extérieur exécutée sur le site. La peinture plein air est difficile et donc, très valorisant. Par exemple, les grands espaces présentent des distractions et l’artiste est chargé de simplifier le tout. Généralement, il y trouve des espaces verts et de la verdure partout !  L’artiste essaie à comprendre les alentours et mettre l’accent sur les grandes formes, les valeurs, la température de la couleur, la composition et la perspective. Tout cela, sont les éléments importants et connus par des artistes sérieux.   

En travaillant en plein air, l’artiste fait face à une variété d’éléments. Dame nature nous offre entre autres, le vent, la chaleur ou le froid et il y a certainement, l’accompagnement d’un public curieux qui s’interroge sur le processus.

Pourquoi le plein air attire les artistes ? Souvent, l’artiste améliore ses habiletés. Car, d’être à l’extérieur permet une certaine immersion dans son art. Cette immersion comprend les effets météorologiques comme le vent, le soleil et l’ambiance du site choisi. Ceci touche les sens et en travaillant plus tard en studio, l’artiste peut incorporer dans son étude les expériences vécues en plein air.

Il est à noter que le partenariat entre Arteast et OPAP pourrait mener à d’autres occasions pour la créativité. Votre participation est donc, très importante.
