by Lynne Alsford

Vernissage – Sunday, 17 February 2013, 1:00-3:00 p.m.,
Promenade Arteast, Shenkman Arts Centre

Arteast got off to a great start in 2013 with the Artistic Interlude Artistique exhibition. Nineteen artists were invited to participate in the organization’s first exhibition of 2013. At the take-in on 9 January, a group of volunteers happily welcomed the artists and their works with a flurry of paperwork, questions and enthusiasm. By the next day, the pieces were hung and the exhibition was open to the public.

Contributing artists were Lynne Alsford, Victoria Bond, Mark Bottomley, Nicole M.R. Côté, Ellen Desmarais, Jill Dodd, Lucy Gagnon, Bill Lalonde, Danielle Lalonde, Joanne Larose, Andrée Marchessault, Monique Miller, Stacy Moser, Michael E. Phillips, Galina Ponomarenko, Olga Radushkevish, Helen Rosseau, Pari Nikbakhsh Zati and Dorothy Zorn. The works presented a variety of subjects and showcased the artists’ talents in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, ink and photography.

On 17 February, exhibitors, other Arteast members, their families and friends, and members of the public attended a vernissage for both the Artistic Interlude Artistique exhibition and the Mosaic exhibition (which was on display in the adjacent Trinity Gallery). A large number of people enjoyed viewing the artworks as well as partaking of refreshments provided by Arteast members and listening to music performed by A Chord East, who added a Celtic flavour to the afternoon. Just before 2:00 p.m., we were joined by a special guest – Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, who was there to present the awards for the Mosaic exhibition.

As a new member of Arteast, this was my first time participating in one of the organization’s exhibitions. Everyone was friendly and helpful and it was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. I would like to thank the organizing committee and all volunteers who worked hard to make Artistic Interlude Artistique (as well as Mosaic) a success.
